Elementary Curriculum

The OUSD Science Department supports the adopted FOSS science curriculum by providing kits to all elementary school sites on a rotational basis every trimester. Live organisms and consumable materials will also be fully supplied. See below for details about the program and various opportunities for teachers.

Lead Science Teachers

Lead Science Teacher "Job Description."

Each school is asked to designate a Lead Science Teacher to assist with the coordination and implementation of FOSS. There will be four meetings during 2011-12 on the following dates and locations:

8/25/11 - 4:30-7:30 pm, Meeting and BBQ, Oakland Zoo
11/15/11- 4-6 pm, Chabot Space & Science Center
3/1/12- 4-6 pm, Oakland Zoo (New Date)
5/15/12- 4-6 pm, Oakland Zoo

All Lead Teachers are expected to attend and will be compensated for their time.

Additional benefits include membership to CRS, as well as a priority invitation to attend Dinner with a Scientist. These benefits are made possible by a grant from the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation.

Below are the FOSS kits for each grade level. Each kit in the chart is linked to the FOSS web site detailing content goals, standards, student learning outcomes, and planning guide. You can also find live organism care information under Teacher Resources. OUSD Teachers can email Phil Cotty to obtain the password to the assessment section. Electronic versions of the Blackline Masters in English and Spanish can be accessed by looking under the Teacher Resources section of each module and selecting Duplication Masters.
