Outdoor Education The OUSD Science Department is creating outdoor education opportunities for teachers and students. This year we are hosting the following events. Registration information and additional details listed below.
Are you interested in taking students outdoors? Want to organize an outdoor club or take a group camping? Need access to equipment for trips? Working with Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT), we are offering a custom Frontcountry Leadership Training (FLT) course for any OUSD K-12 teacher or administrator. This entry level course covers all the basic skills needed to successfully take students on outdoor camping trips. Skills covered include all aspects of trip planning and proper equipment use: food management, tent and stove-set up, clothing, nutrition, teambuilding, day-hiking and curriculum connections. Safety is the top priority, and all learning is experiential. Once you complete the course, you will have free access to the huge gear library at BAWT for use with students including tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, stoves, etc. There will be an initial gear orientation meeting on April 2, 5-7 pm at the BAWT Office at 1050 E 8th St Oakland, CA 94606. The weekend overnight training will take place April 6, 8 am through April 7, 3 pm, at Tilden Regional Park. Cost is subsidized by the science department. While this program is mainly for science teachers, non-science teachers are invited. Teams of teachers from the same school are encouraged. Limited to 20 teachers. Click here to register. Deadline is March 22. 2013. REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR THIS TRAINING HAS PASSED, BUT WE STILL HAVE SPACE. IF YOU ARE STILL INTERESTED IN ATTENDING, PLEASE CONTACT CALEB CHEUNG AT CALEB.CHEUNG@OUSD.K12.CA.US AND REGISTER USING THE LINK. Because the science department is covering the full $120 registration fee which cannot be refunded, we are asking all participants provide a $75 personal check by the deadline. When you attend the training, the check will be returned to you. If need to cancel and no one can take your space, the check will be used to offset our expenses. Checks should be made out to Oakland Unified School District and can be dropped off or mailed to our Tilden office: Caleb Cheung Please contact Caleb Cheung with questions.
